In addition to the danger of a person being harmed by an unprotected high voltage, a functional failure or even a fire must be strictly avoided. However, the use of suitable insulation materials also influences and increases the longevity of electrical and electronic devices. Improved heat dissipation, for example, massively reduces thermal ageing. In addition, workpieces with a durable insulation material still have good insulation values even after many thousands of hours in operation.

Properties of insulation films

We offer special films with particular stability and resistance to high temperatures. These film solutions are characterised by a very good continuous service temperature. They can also withstand particularly high temperatures for short periods of time, making them suitable for use in demanding applications. Furthermore, some insulating films have a high tensile strength and insulation resistance, as well as a high resistance to chemicals. Therefore, high-performance films are clearly superior to many other insulating materials.

Temperature resistance of plastic films.

Temperature resistance is a crucial factor in the selection of films for electrical insulation. We offer a wide range of temperature-resistant films made of polycarbonate. These films are suitable for permanent use in a temperature range of up to 105 degrees Celsius. In the short term, they can even withstand temperatures of up to 160 degrees Celsius, and only from 190 / 200 degrees Celsius they become thermo-elastic. Thanks to these properties, these films are ideal for use as insulation material.

For applications with higher temperature ranges, we offer various high-performance films made of PEI or PBT that can withstand even higher temperatures of up to 200 degrees Celsius. 

Dielectric strength / electric strength.

Dielectric strength is the resistance of a film to internal breakdown. It measures the electric field strength and conductivity that may prevail in it at most without a voltage breakdown occurring. Dielectric strength or dielectric strength is therefore important in the application of electrical insulation.

What materials are films for electrical insulation made of?

The individual film types and materials differ in their special properties and capabilities, which recommends them overall for a very wide range of applications. All films for electrical insulators have excellent dielectric strength and good resistance to high temperatures.

Electrical insulation films made of polycarbonate

Polycarbonate (PC) has been widely used in electronics for a long time. Polycarbonate films have good dielectric strength and can be used in temperature ranges up to about 140°C without significant shrinkage. Since the material is thermoplastic, polycarbonate films can be thermoformed. PC is also very suitable for printed labels. In a flame-retardant version with UL 94 V0 listing, a polycarbonate film is ideal for use in electronic components. We offer a wide range of polycarbonate films in different thicknesses.

Electrical insulation films made of polyester (PET)

Polyester films (PET) are also very often used as insulation material in the electrical industry. Polyester films have the advantage of a favourable price combined with excellent physical and chemical properties. PET films can be used for applications with a continuous temperature of 130°C. In addition, it has a high resistance to many common chemicals, which is relevant for applications in the field of electronics. We offer PET film from the manufacturer Dupont and other well-known manufacturers. Polyester films are better known as Mylar film (Dupont) or Hostaphan (Mitsubishi). Our Mylar A film has an enormous insulation strength of 280 kV/mm. Most other plastic films such as Hostaphan have an electrical insulation strength of between 50 and 200 kV/mm. In addition to polyester films, you will find many other technical films in various thicknesses in our product range, cut to size, by the metre or in rolls.

High performance films made of PEI and PBT

If the film has to permanently withstand temperatures above 150°C, our high-performance films made of PEI or PBT-PC can be a solution. These plastic films impress with their enormous resistance to high temperatures and therefore meet even the highest requirements. How can electrically insulating film be processed?

Insulating films are mostly used for series production in large quantities. For this purpose, film parts are usually die-cut, as this is the most effective and cost-efficient method for larger quantities. All our technical films are suitable for the production of die-cut parts. 

For smaller runs, other methods such as laser cutting are used. Many of our films are also suitable for this. After being cut into the desired shape, the films can be printed, formed and bonded depending on the material. This means that our plastic films offer optimum processability for almost any requirement.
