PEEK films – what is PEEK and what properties does this thermoplastic have?

PEEK (polyetheretherketone) is a thermoplastic, high-performance plastic polymer manufactured by Victrex. The main features and advantages of films made of PEEK polymers are their high temperature resistance, mechanical strength, chemical stability, outstanding abrasion and wear resistance, and electrical insulation. PEEK therefore offers a durability to key external factors such as chemicals and heat.
Films made of polyetheretherketone (PEEK) polymers – sold under the brand APTIV - are a modern plastic that is used in a wide variety of applications and industries.

Properties of PEEK film

PEEK films impress with properties that hardly any other plastic film has. These characteristics make Polyetheretherketone films absolute high-performance films.
Properties of PEEK films from Victrex:

  • Very high continuous use temperature / operating temperature
  • Very good chemical stability
  • High toughness and rigidity combined with good elongation at break
  • Very good electrical properties – ideal for insulation
  • Inherently low flammability
  • Excellent mechanical properties and wear resistance
  • Excellent durability against radiation
  • Good fatigue resistance
  • Only very small amounts of toxic gases are released when burned

PEEK films are available in rolls or rectangular sheets of the required sheet size. We offer these materials in different strengths. For further information about PEEK film solutions, please contact us. We look forward to hearing from you!

Great thermal stability

The melting point of the PEEK film is 343 °C. This means that PEEK can be used for short periods at temperatures of up to 300 °C. This makes it an absolute high-performance film with excellent durability to heat and high temperatures, ideal for all areas with particularly high continuous use temperatures. In addition, APTIV plastic films have low flammability, ideal for a wide variety of industries and applications.

Chemical resistance

PEEK speciality films are resistant to most conventional solvents and chemicals and offer better chemical resistance than many precious metals. They exhibit excellent steadiness to alcohols, aromatic hydrocarbons, halogens, ketones, fats and oils, acids and alkalis and many other chemical components and are unstable in the presence of oxidising acids. The material properties of the plastic films hardly change, even after 2,000 hours of storage in 200°C hot steam.

Strength, rigidity and robustness

Victrex PEEK films impresses with its extremely high strength and rigidity compared to other plastics over its entire service life, even at temperatures above the glass transition temperature of 143°C. PEEK also offers an excellent tear resistance, and acoustic properties. In addition, the plastic film is radiation-stable and fatigue-resistant.

Electrical permanence

Films made of PEEK (polyetheretherketone) polymers have very good electrical properties over a very wide range of temperatures, frequencies and humidity levels. This makes the products ideal for electrical insulation and for the construction of printed circuit boards, even when the plastic film is very thin.

Excellent wear properties

Products made from the high-performance plastic PEEK offer excellent and mechanical and wear resistance, making them the ideal solution for protecting moving parts from abrasion and wear.

Low toxicity

PEEK films guarantees very low toxicity of combustion gases. Only very small amounts of toxic gases are released during combustion. APTIV 1000 films have the lowest smoke density of all thermoplastics. They are also inherently flame-retardant and therefore halogen-free in accordance with IEC 61249-2-21.
