Properties and advantages of Victrex Aptiv films

High heat resistance and continuous use temperatures

The melting point of these high-performance films is 343 °C. This means that they can be used in lead-free soldering processes at temperatures of up to 300 °C for short periods. APTIV® films offer a UL RTI value of 220 °C for mechanical applications without impact forces and 200 °C for electrical applications with films between 25 µm and 125 µm thickness. This makes the PEEK films from Victrex the ideal solution for usage with high continuous use temperatures or contact with chemicals. For more Information, please contact us.

Chemical resistance

PEEK film materials are resistant to most conventional solvents and chemicals and offer better chemical resistance than many precious metals. They exhibit excellent resistance to acids, alkalis, oxidising agents, hydrocarbons, salts and water vapour/hot steam. The chemical resistance remain virtually unchanged even after 2,000 hours of storage in 200°C hot steam.

High strength, rigidity and robustness

Victrex Aptiv PEEK films offer particularly high strength and rigidity compared to any other plastic material over its entire service life, even at temperatures above the glass transition temperature (Tg) of 143°C. PEEK films also offer excellent tear resistance, puncture resistance, hydrolysis resistance and acoustic properties which makes it the ideal solutions for various applications.

Electrical stability of PEEK plastic

Aptiv film has very good electrical properties over a very wide range of temperatures, frequencies and humidity levels. This makes the PEEK material the ideal solution for insulation and electronics applications.

Excellent wear properties

APTIV® films made from the high-performance plastic PEEK offer excellent wear protection. The Lpv performance is 145 MPa m/min without the addition of lubricants. APTIV has a particularly smooth surface with very low particle generation.

Low toxicity

The Aptiv film is flame-retardant without the use of flame retardants and guarantees very low toxicity of combustion gases. Aptiv films have the lowest smoke density of all thermoplastics. They are also inherently flame-retardant and therefore halogen-free in accordance with IEC 61249-2-21.

Applications and areas of use

The extremely versatile thermoplastic film made from Victrex PEEK polymer is used in various demanding applications in a wide variety of sectors, industries and markets, such as electronics, acoustics, aerospace technology, automotive technology, industrial, oil and gas, chemical and all types of insulation engineering. Typical applications include:

  • Wear-resistant bearings
  • Sensor membranes
  • Manufacturing of seals
  • Components for electronics
  • Insulation engineering
  • Manufacturing of 5G components
  • Labels
  • Replacement for PTFE membrane seals
  • And much more

Processing Victrex Aptiv films

APTIV films can be processed in a wide variety of ways and offer engineers the opportunity to utilise the outstanding characteristics of VICTREX PEEK in a thin, flexible and light weight format. Here you find some often used ways of processing PEEK material.

Coating and metallisation

APTIV film can be coated with a range of materials, including silicone and acrylic adhesives, stage-B hot melt adhesives, hard coatings and printable label. APTIV product grades with modified surface energy offer improved adhesion and enable further coating options.

Victrex PEEK films combines a range of excellent material properties and can also be metallised using various processes, including vacuum deposition, sputtering, electroless deposition and direct thermal bonding of metal foils. Many metals, such as aluminium, copper and stainless steel, can be bonded to the thermoplastic APTIV film without adhesives such as acrylic glue.

Thermal lamination and thermoforming

As the APTIV film is thermoplastic, it can be applied to many substrates without adhesive by thermal lamination, e.g. bonding with metals, fabrics and polymer films. Stack presses and roll-to-roll processes are used for this purpose.

Thermoforming makes Victrex films the ideal solution for customised engineering components.

Punching and embossing

Thermoplastic Victrex APTIV films can be reliably punched and embossed. This type of processing allows customers to design customised sealing discs, sealing rings and components in various sizes and shapes for their products (also suitable for creating membrane seals). Mechanical processes are mostly used for processing, but laser cutting and water jet processes are also possible with APTIV films. This makes the PEEK films an ideal basis for labels and many other chemical-resistant applications.
