What is Mylar film
As a specialist in technical films, we offer the very popular Mylar A polyester film. Mylar A is the brand name for a film made of the plastic polyethylene terephthalate (PET). It is made by the leading international manufacturer Mylar Specialty Films (former DuPont Teijin Films). Mylar are high quality and flexible films made of the material polyester with excellent chemical, electrical and thermal properties. The biaxially oriented polyester film can be used for various industrial and electronic applications and industries. Mylar films are used in the automotive, electrical and electronics industries, for card applications, in the furniture industry or in the pharmaceutical and healthcare sectors. These BOPET polyester films are used for labels, die-cut parts, insulating parts, food packaging, food labels, as stencils for painting works and other technical and industrial applications. Mylar films are often referred to as hostaphan.
We have Mylar films available in various thicknesses. We supply both rolls and cut-to-size sheets in the format you require. We are happy to support you and offer you technical data sheets (from the manufacturer Mylar Speciality films) and samples for prototypes or initial tests. In addition, we can advise you on your project or send you an offer tailored to your project. Contact us, we look forward to hearing from you!
Properties of Mylar polyester film
The transparent film (BOPET film) material with the brand name Mylar A is flexible and appears milky cloudy with increasing thickness / strength. Some customers ask us if Mylar film is transparent. This is the case, even though the plastic film has a certain cloudiness and is therefore not crystal clear.
Mylar A polyester products are characterised by a high resistance to higher temperatures as well as excellent chemical and physical properties. The biaxially oriented polyester film (polyethylene terephthalate) is an enormously good electrical insulator and has excellent insulation properties. Mylar products have the advantage of low moisture absorption and high dielectric strength. In addition, the Mylar polyester sheets are resistant to chemical impacts and solvents and has high tensile strength. The tensile strength is defined as the maximum tensile stress that a material can withstand while being stretched before breaking.
Is Mylar film temperature stable?
Mylar A BOPET polyester products have great stability at elevated temperatures. They can be used permanently in the temperature range from - 70 °C up to 150 °C. The melting point of the temperature-stable films is over 200 °C. This means that the PET film Mylar has excellent thermal properties.
Is Mylar A polyester film printable?
Biaxially Polyester (PET) films made of the material polyethylene terephthalate are not printable without a special surface coating. Mylar A films do not have such a coating and are therefore not specifically suitable for printing.
Product properties of Mylar films at a glance?
The Mylar film of Mylar Specialty Films (former DuPont Teijin Films) is one the most chemical and temperature resistant plastic film solutions. Here is an overview of the properties of the Mylar A polyester material:
- High temperature resistance (heat resistant) - temperature range from -70 to 150 °C
- Excellent insulation properties
- Chemical resistance
- Resistant to solvents
- No plasticisers, therefore almost no embrittlement / ageing
- Good dielectric propertys
- Enormous tensile strength
- Low moisture absorption
It is precisely because of their high stability and excellent resistance to high temperatures and chemical materials that Mylar BOPET films made of polyethylene terephthalate (polyester) are frequently used in industry.
You can order the heat resistant and transparent film Mylar A from us in different material thicknesses as rolls or directly cut to size into sheets. We have Mylar PET plastic film available for you and look forward to receiving your enquiry.
Processing of Mylar films
Mylar PET films of Mylar Specialty Films (former DuPont Teijin Films) can be processed in various ways. These include the possibility of cutting, laser cutting, punching, bending, printing or heat sealing. Furthermore, you can make Mylar film self-adhesive or antistatic. Under normal conditions, crystal-clear transparent PET film shows good ageing behaviour and does not become brittle as it does not contain any plasticisers. Deformation under heat is possible to a limited extent for a biaxially oriented polyester film. Printing onto the Mylar film is not possible without a special coating on the material surface.
No special accessories are required for processing the Mylar polyester film and PET films in general. If you do not want to cut the film products to size into sheets yourself, you can also order suitable sheets directly from us in addition to whole rolls. The material can easily be cut with a laser. Regardless of whether you need small quantities or large-scale production, we are your professional partner for technical film solutions.
Use / applications of Mylar film (former DuPont Teijin Films)
