Flame retardant polycarbonate films for a strong performance

Many applications have requirements for a flame retardant films that meet certain fire protection classes. The König Film Centre offers flame-retardant polycarbonate films in different thickness and surface from the leading brands Lexan ® (from the manufacturer Sabic ®) and Makrofol ® (from the manufacturer Covestro ®).

These are flame retardant polycarbonate films with consistent insulation properties and good printability. The main advantages of these polycarbonate products are:

  • Flame retardant according to UL94 V0 and VTM-0
  • Compliance with numerous environmental standards
  • Excellent thermal and electrical insulation properties
  • High mechanical strength (impact resistance)
  • Thermal performance (resistance to high temperature)
  • Good dielectric strength
  • Low moisture absorption
  • Compatibility with adhesives
  • High density and light weight

Thanks to their formability and dimensional stability, flame retardant polycarbonate films and sheets are reliable at a high temperature and easy to process. A key advantage of polycarbonate as high performance plastic material is its mechanical resistance against any impact.

Characteristics of polycarbonate films and sheets

Films made of polycarbonate material are a high performance plastic characterised by two main properties:

Impact resistance of polycarbonate sheets & films

Impact resistance describes the ability of a material to absorb impact energy and mechanical loads. Polycarbonate films and sheets are enormously impact proof and thus significantly more resilient than many other products. This makes this polycarbonate sheet with high density ideal as resistant protection material for machines, clear glass protection and many other applications with high requirements.

Heat resistant polycarbonate sheets for high temperature operations

A particular advantage of the material polycarbonate - compared to other material - is its enormous resistance against high temperature. Due to a proof against temperatures of - 40 °C to 130 °C, these films can be used for demanding applications worldwide. The manufacturers of polycarbonate films and sheets specify a continuous service temperature of 105 °C. This enables a short-term or even permanent use at high temperature for which other material is not suitable. The heat resistance against elevated temperatures / heat is a big advantage of our clear polycarbonate films.

Further advantages of flame retardant polycarbonate sheets & films

Transparent polycarbonate films an sheets convinces users by its optical quality. The clear, transparent polycarbonate film has an optical quality and is ideal for all applications with requirements for an optical quality.

Applications of flame retardant polycarbonate films

Our heat resistant polycarbonate films are used for diverse applications and uses which have requirements for a high performance plastic such as:

  • Heat and dielectric insulation
  • Die-cut insulators and spacers
  • High quality labels and overlay
  • Use as printed circuit boards
  • Use as EMI shielding
  • Battery packs and adaptors for computers, laptops and mobile phones
  • Use for light applications using LED light

What are the relevant fire safety standards for flame-retardant films

There are a wide variety of fire protection classes and specifications for plastics and polycarbonate worldwide. For industrial applications, the American standard UL 94 has become the accepted and used standard / requirement. This standard is more important than typical national fire protection standards such as B1 in Germany. This is because sheets, films and parts made of plastic (in this case of polycarbonate) are used worldwide.

What is UL 94 V0?

UL94 is a standard of the American test laboratory Underwrites Laboratories, in which the burning properties and fire safety of plastics are examined. V0 is the highest flammability class for plastics according to UL94. We offer various films and a polycarbonate sheet that are flame retardant and correspond to UL 94 V0.

How is the UL 94 V0 test carried out?

In the UL 94 HB (Horizontal Burning) test, the burning of a horizontal piece of plastic is tested. In the much more demanding UL 94 V (Vertical Burning) test, a vertical piece is lit up and burns. The fire behaviour of the plastic results in the classification into classes V0, V1 or V2. A listing according to UL 94 V0 is considered the classification with the best fire protection and flame retardant properties.

Processing flame retardant polycarbonate films and sheets

Our flame retardant polycarbonate films with UL 94 V0 listing can be processed like normal clear polycarbonate films. There are no restrictions here for the use of our polycarbonate sheet with high density.

Our product range – polycarbonate films with flame resistance

As a specialist for polycarbonate films, we offer numerous products with UL 94 V0 fire protection standard, which have different properties and can be divided according to the following factors:

Color and optical properties of our flame retardant polycarbonate films

Most polycarbonate films and sheets are clear and without colour. We offer flame retardant polycarbonate films in the following color:

  • Optical clear and transparent (no color)
  • Transparent matt (not 100 % clear, no color)
  • Black color

Surfaces and thickness of flame-retardant polycarbonate sheets

Our polycarbonate film products with UL 94 V0 listing are available in a material thickness between 250 µm to 1 mm (as polycarbonate sheet). Depending on the application, we recommend the flame-retardant transparent polycarbonate film with the suitable properties in the right thickness.
