LLEAF film - a revolution for the agricultural and food industry

LLEAF, a company based in Sydney, Australia, developes, patents and produces light-responsive dyes when exposed to sunlight. The LLEAF technology stands for "Luminescent Light Emitting Agricultural Films" and is based on extensive research of the light spectrum. These dyes respond to sunlight by fluorescing, both absorbing and emitting light. They absorb light of one colour and emit light of another colour. Their primary function is to alter the natural light spectrum to better suit specific crops. The proprietary dyes are added to a transparent polycarbonate plastic film, creating a fluorescent film that leverages research on plant growth. LLEAF films are placed inside greenhouses between the sun and the plant. This technology adjusts the light spectrum to increase photosynthesis or simulate seasonal changes.

The result of the LLEAF technology is a significantly faster future growth (+ 20 %) of all green plants such as lettuce, cucumbers, tomatoes, basil, peppers, aubergines, Asian vegetables, strawberries or cannabis. The LLEAF film also works for herbs and flowers. Well-founded studies and research on this is already available or will be available in the near future.

Dye molecules in the polycarbonate film absorb lightphotons mainly from the green part of the spectrum, emitting red light photons in 620 nm wavelength. The LLEAF film shifts the colour spectrum, emitting more red light enhancing the prospects for future food security. This redlight favours photosynthesis and thus faster plant growth. This results in quicker crop turnover, which enhances agricultural productivity. Additionally, this technology enables growers to engage in out-of-season cultivation.

The luminescent LLEAF film also diffuses light, which reduces the occurrence of shade spots in a greenhouse. The agricultural film ensures a more even light distribution across the crop, promoting healthier and uniform plant growth.
