Diffuser films

for an improved light diffusion and light transmission

What is a diffuser film?

A diffuser film is a special foil for lighting technology. With it, you achieve an improved light diffusion and light transmission. This makes it possible to achieve various lighting effects that depend on the diffusion of the film, the power of the light source and the position of the light source. In combination with LED light sources, considerable energy savings can be achieved at the same time.

As a specialist for technical films, we offer you numerous products for lighting applications and LED light sources. These are polycarbonate films of the Makrofol ® brand from Covestro and Lexan ® from Sabic. We also offer high-quality PMMA films from Röhm. All our products are available in rolls or directly cut to size into formats.

Other typical designations for films for light diffusion are, among others:

  • Diffusion films
  • Light scattering films
  • Diffusion foils
  • Filter films (for light)

Our films for light diffusion have an opal white colour and are available in rolls or cut to your desired size. We will be happy to advise you on the right film for your project and application!

What are light diffuser films used for?

Opal diffuser films are milky white (opal white) and contain a scattering additive specially developed for this application to ensure uniform light diffusion. When used in backlit components, our diffuser foils provide uniform and homogeneous illumination over a wide area. The lamps and light sources behind them are then no longer visible. The high-performance diffuser films allow different degrees of diffusion. They also offer a high impact strength and excellent temperature resistance for optimised LED lighting. This makes diffuser films the ideal solution for various applications such as spotlights or other light sources. Therefore, they are an enormously important product for the lighting technology and the lamp industry.

We offer all film types as non-adhesive products. We do not have a self-adhesive diffuser film in our range. However, we would be happy to name one of our customers who can provide you with self-adhesive diffuser materials.

What are the properties and advantages of diffuser films / LED diffuser films?

Light diffuser films for LED lighting are made of high-quality materials. The most commonly used products include films made of polycarbonate (PC) and PMMA. Depending on the material, there are different product properties and areas of application. However, all lighting films can be easily punched and cut. We have compiled all the advantages of the individual plastics for you in our corresponding categories. There you will also find information on the respective light transmission and other film properties.

We will be happy to recommend the right product for your project and the light colour used (warm white or cool white). You can buy diffusion films directly cut to size or as complete rolls in various widths. For initial tests or the construction of prototypes, we will be happy to send you samples in DIN A4 format in advance on request.

How strongly do the diffusion films scatter the light?

The individual diffuser films differ in terms of thickness, colour, light scattering (half-value angle) and transmittance (light transmission). Depending on the application, illuminant, light colour (cold or warm white) and surface, a diffusion films with different light values is recommended. Different types of film and thicknesses can be used to achieve a wide variety of diffusion effects. We will be happy to provide you with the light values for all diffusion films and advise you on your choice. Ultimately, however, you cannot avoid testing with samples to see the light diffusion effect of the respective film with your own eyes. We will be happy to supply you with samples for your components in advance so that you can compare the film types.

Temperature stability of diffuser foils.

LED films made of polycarbonate are characterised not only by good impact strength but also by a high temperature resistance. Due to a resistance of - 40 °C to 130 °C, they can be used for demanding applications worldwide. The manufacturers of PC films specify a continuous service temperature of 105 °C. This allows the use of short-term or long-term applications. This allows use at short-term or permanently elevated temperatures for which diffuser films made of other materials are not suitable.

Can diffuser films be used outdoors?

Plexiglas films made of PMMA are ideal for outdoor applications thanks to their high UV resistance. The weatherproof Plexiglas film is the ideal solution for LED lamps for terraces, gardens, balconies or other outdoor applications. PMMA diffuser films are therefore also often used in industry. Examples are backlit displays, light boxes, backlit advertising boards or direct mail.

What are typical applications of diffuser films?

Typical applications of our light management films are in the automotive sector and the lighting industry. Our films for light distribution made of polycarbonate or PMMA are also used in the following areas:

  • Various industrial projects such as illuminated components.
  • Diffusion of cold and warm white LED light.
  • Backlit displays, indicators and switches.
  • Interior parts for automobiles (LED film for cars).
  • Construction of lamps, spotlights, luminaires and lampshades.
  • Residential and commercial lighting.
  • Light boxes and illuminated advertising.
  • Direct mail and illuminated billboards.
  • Light filter film
  • Light distribution for lamps and light sources such as LED spots
  • Homogeneous illumination of components and lights

We will be happy to recommend the right milky white LED light diffuser film for your application.

How are light diffuser films processed?

All diffuser films for LED applications can be further processed with suitable accessories. The processing of the films depends on the chosen material. Diffuser films can usually be cut, punched and glued well. Films for light distribution can also be easily screen-printed. Please contact us for further information on printability!
